Police tighten security around ‘miraculous’ cross

Security has been beefed up around a sign of the cross which appeared last week Wednesday five feet away from Assakio central mosque in Assakio community, Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Some youths in Assakio community who spoke to The PUNCH under the condition of anonymity said that the police action was to prevent any crisis that the cross’ presence might generate. It was leant that Assakio community, which comprises Alago, Eggon, Mada, Migili, Tiv, Nizo, Kwandara and Akye have existed for over 300 years before it was engulfed in communal crisis between 2012 and 2014. Our correspondent observed that the venue has attracted Christians from far and wide, as thousands of people, including the sick, have thronged the venue, where they pray for forgiveness and healing. However, the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abubakar Bello, has called on the people of Assakio to live in peace, describing it as the catalyst for rapid development. He disclosed that after he paid a visit to the place, he had deployed some policemen to the venue to maintain law and order. Also speaking, the paramount ruler of Assakio, His Royal Highness, Osula Inarigu, urged his people to embrace one another, irrespective of their religious disposition. The Makungujin Assakio, Sabo Atoshi who spoke on behalf of the traditional ruler, explained that the appearance of the cross is a sign of good things to happen to the people of Assakio. Our correspondent however observed that the image of the cross is gradually fading off.
