MM70 – The spectacle to end all spectacles
This cannot be sufficiently explained without beginning from the beginning.
In September 2015, the idea to establish an establishment that would serve as a watering hole or primordial kitchen or training ground for the Faculty of Law’s conspicuous yet hidden plethora of public speaking talent was born. It would be called “The Microphone”.
20th January 2016, The Microphone; hosted its “MICtriculation” which served as the matriculation of the public speaking pseudo-college and was garnished with debates, poetry, rap and more, thoroughly entertaining a full beyond capacity law annex.
February 2016, The Microphone began its weekly Friday public speaking classes, where various areas of public speaking, from “presence, poise and posture” to “mic handling” to “drama and diction” were taught, and practical sessions were held at the end of each class to err…practicalise all that had been taught.
1st April 2016, The Microphone hosted its APRIL FOOL’s SPECIAL, where some of the most intelligent members of the Faculty of Law, exchanged wit and words on some of the most outlandish of topics, thoroughly entertaining an audience and had a delightful little trick at the end.

Still confused about the format?
How It all goes down:-
48 contestants grouped into 12 groups with 4 contestants in each group slug it out. The best speaker in each group qualifies to the next round. The 4 “best losers” also qualify to the next round, making a total of 16 moving to the next round. (ROUND 1)
The 16 speakers then meet up with another set of 16 “seeded” speakers comprising 8 invited highly rated speakers from the Faculty of Law and 8 invited highly rated speakers from the 7 other faculties in UNILAG. Thus completing 32 speakers, who would be seeded and grouped into 8 groups with 4 contestants in each group with the top 2 speakers from each group qualifying for the Semi-Finals. (ROUND 2)
The 16 Semi Finalists would then contest in one all-encompassing battle royale, with the top 6 speakers qualifying for the final. (SEMI FINAL)
The top 6 speakers would then battle it out, from which 1 winner would emerge. (THE FINAL)
And now for some “SOs”

So if you’ve won or competed in just about every competition you could lay your hands on and feel you need more of a challenge? Here’s your chance.
So you’re considered by a lot of people to be one of the best, or maybe the best public speaker(s) in the Faculty, but yet there are a few people who might disagree or think someone else is the best? There’s only one way to make them shut up. Here it is!
So you’re Soso and you’re so so……..I think that’s enough. Sha this competition is designed for everybody and for nobody. From the established bad guys to the hidden gems.
Now close your eyes, think earnestly about it, imagine the moment when they call out your name as the winner of Project Mic Man, forget about the 70,000 Naira and plethora of other stuff, forget about the euphoria, the gratification, the booming celebratory champion music, the people lifting you up in the air (either physically or with their shouts of elation), forget about the aura that’ll envelope you, the cheers, the hugs and kisses, the sky-rocket in famzers, fans and popularity. Forget all that, just close your eyes and think, just think about the fact that you just beat 63 other people in a competition, 63 of the best public speakers in the University of Lagos. Sixty Three!!
